To watch television on the Internet, especially for replays, the French now use their smartphone more than their television. The computer is becoming less and less popular.

On 19 June 2019, the National Centre for Cinema and Moving Images (CNC) published its télévision de rattrapage (TVR) barometer, based on data collected in April 2019. One of the findings of this report is the increasing use of the smartphone to watch videos online.

To Watch Television On The Internet, The Smartphone Is The Most Popular Medium Ahead Of The TV

As you can see from the graph at the end of the article, the mobile phone has become the dominant medium for enjoying online television. 40.8% of consumption is carried out by this means.

Ironically, television is only the second device preferred by the French to watch television on the Internet (31.2%). The computer drops back to 17.1%, just in front of the tablets (11%).

On the question of the type of content viewed, the study commissioned by the CNC indicates that fiction (film and series) is the most popular with the public, with a 37.7% share.

Next come youth programmes with 26.5% and entertainment with 15%. 94.6% of television consumption via the Internet is via replay offers, compared to only 5.4% direct.

In April 2019, TF1’s most successful video-on-demand show is Demain nous appartient, ahead of The Voice and Paw Patrol.

For France TV, the daily series Plus Belle La Vie is still as popular as ever. Peppapig and Un si grand soleil follow on the public service channels.

On the M6 side, Les Marseillais Asian Tour replaced Top Chef and Kaamelott. Alexandre Astier’s fiction (whose first film is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2020) continues to be a hit despite a decade of no new episodes. Cult.
